Cyber Month: Tips to Protect What Matters: Endpoint Security for Schools

24 Oct 2024

Every school relies on technology—whether it’s laptops, smartphones or tablets, we’re all connected. But with all that connectivity comes risk. That’s where endpoint security steps in. It’s like a digital shield for every device that connects to your network, ensuring data stays safe and hackers stay out.

But what exactly is endpoint security – let’s break it down.

What is Endpoint Security?

Every device you use—whether it’s a student’s iPad, a teacher’s laptop or your office computer—is an endpoint. Endpoint security refers to the strategies and technologies we use to secure these devices from threats like viruses, malware and hackers.

Think of endpoints as the doors to your house – something you would never leave open! Endpoint security ensures that each ‘door’ in your network is locked tight and only the right people can access what’s inside.

Why It Matters for Schools:

  1. Data Protection
In schools, protecting data is critical. Schools hold sensitive information like student records, financial info and more. A breach can lead to major headaches—think missing funds, missing personal data for example that leads to damaged reputations and disrupted operations.
  2. Compliance
For UK schools, keeping data safe isn’t just a good practice—it’s the law. Check out Gov website for further information here.
  3. Remote Learning
With more people learning remotely, teachers and admin carrying out their daily roles remotely, endpoints like personal laptops and tablets are often outside the safety a school’s network. This means they’re even more vulnerable to attacks. Without endpoint security, a hacker could access your school’s network through a compromised device.

Common Threats to Be Aware Of:

  • Phishing Attacks: Fraudulent emails or messages that trick users into revealing sensitive info.
  • Ransomware: A type of malware that locks your data and demands payment for its release.
  • Unsecured Wi-Fi: Using public or weakly protected Wi-Fi can expose your device to cybercriminals.
  • Outdated Software: Old, unpatched software is a playground for hackers looking to exploit vulnerabilities.

Simple Steps to Boost Your Endpoint Security:

  1. Keep Devices Updated
Ensure all devices have the latest security updates. This might seem obvious, but many cyberattacks happen because someone hasn’t installed a crucial update.
  2. Use Strong, Unique Passwords
Encourage staff, students and employees to create strong passwords and use a password manager to keep track of them. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) adds another layer of protection.
  3. Invest in Endpoint Security Solutions
Whether it’s an antivirus software, a firewall or more advanced software, it’s worth investing in endpoint security tools to prevent threats before they happen.
  4. Train all staff and pupils
Users are often the weakest link in cybersecurity (see our previous blog here). Regularly educate your team and students about online risks, like phishing and what they can do to stay safe.
  5. Monitor Activity
Use tools that help you monitor the devices connected to your network. This can alert you to any unusual behaviour, like a device that’s acting suspiciously.
  6. Least Privilege

Try to limit access to users’ access or privileges to those needed to perform their job functions. For example, allowing IT specialists to install new software, not regular users.

Why Now?

Cyber threats are on the rise and attackers are getting smarter every day. The UK saw a rise in ransomware attacks last year, with schools at risk. Plus, October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month—a perfect time to take stock of your security practices and make sure you’re doing everything you can to protect your devices and data.

Remember, endpoint security isn’t just for the big players. Schools are targets too and often lack the resources to recover quickly from an attack. By taking some simple steps now, you can protect your school from a costly cyber incident.
